Mortlake Green Playground Improvement - Final Consultation

Closes 30 Jun 2017

Opened 9 Jun 2017

Overview

Following a review of the comments received during the previous play consultation, Richmond Council are proposing the following amendments to our design for Mortlake Green.

As the majority of respondents felt strongly that the basketball hoop was a valuable asset to the green, the Council has decided it should remain in situ. The spinning dish will also be retained as users have informed us that this item is well used by younger children.

With the Section 106 funding that has been earmarked to spend on improving the play provision of Mortlake Green, the Council would like to propose the following additions within the existing play area and outside the playground perimeter fencing.

Within the existing play area the proposal is to:

  • Install a new play train – this will be installed on new safety surface in the space between the cradle swings and the traditional rocking horse.
  • Remove a lesser used spinning pole play item and relocate an existing bench to accommodate a new space net and safety surface. The existing see-saw will be retained if adequate safety surfacing is available.
  • Install two activity panels onto posts along the brick wall.
  • Install a variety of games and activity markings onto the tarmac surface of the playground including hopscotch board, alphabet grid, compass point and clock with numerals.

Outside of the existing play area the proposal is to:

  • Install a timber framed bird’s nest basket swing with grass matting between two trees adjacent to the play area.
  • Install a wooden trim trail that would include 10 stepping stumps, monkey bars, balance beams, trapeze rings and stepping poles.
  • A log seating area for outdoor education sessions will also be installed near the shrub beds on the eastern border.

Examples of the type of play equipment, markings and log seating are provided in the attachments below along with an annotated map that shows an approximate location of all of the items.

As part of the upgrade, all existing play equipment will be refurbished as required and a review of the provision of bins and seating will be undertaken.

The aim of this consultation is to inform playground users and the wider public about our proposals, to establish whether the proposals are supported and to gather feedback. There is also the option for respondents to say whether they would be keen on forming a Friends Group and providing their contact details.
